Hearing it spoken

Written Siargaonon can only take you so far — the sounds are what give a speaker away. Two rules matter more than any other: the letter J is always hard, as in the English "jump" (never softened to a "y"), and many words that use an L in neighbouring languages use a Y here — ulo becomes uyo, balay becomes bayay. Here, There, and Over There

English gets by with two words for position. Siargaonon uses three, and the difference between them is who is near what.

Jari ako sa bayay — I am here at the house — uses jari for something close to the speaker. Jaon sija sa bayay puts him there, in a place away from you. And Jadto sija sa iskuylahan uses jadto for somewhere further off again, away from both of you.

Choosing between them is not stylistic. Using jari for something across the island is as odd as saying this about something you cannot reach.

Three Words for Here

English has one. Siargaonon has Jari, Diri and Dinhi, and they are not interchangeable.

Jari carries a particular situation: the speaker is here, and the person being spoken to is somewhere else. That is why Jari ako sa bayay works so naturally as I am here at the house — it is what you say to someone who is not.

Diri and Dinhi both point at a place where something was. The difference between them is precision.

Diri raman adto kaina says it was here — here in the general sense, this area, somewhere about. Dinhi raman adto kaina says the same thing but narrows it: that exact spot. Not around here, but there, precisely, where I am pointing.

English needs a whole extra phrase to do that — right there, exactly there. Siargaonon changes one word.

And the first two stack. Jari diri means right here, sharpening jari the way English reaches for right.

Diri Also Means Hand It Over

This is the one that catches learners out. Away from questions of location, Diri is what you say when you want someone to pass you something.

There is a second word for it: ambi. Both ask for the thing, but ambi is the authoritative one — it carries more weight, closer to a command than a request. Which you choose depends on who you are speaking to.

So hearing Diri does not always mean a place is being discussed. If a hand is out, it is the other sense.

All three start with a hard J. It is the J of jump, never a Y — and since these are among the most-used words in the language, getting the sound right here pays off constantly.

Uman Is Two Words Squeezed Together

Uman jaon asks what that is, and uman is a contraction of uno plus man. Siargaonon compresses pairs of small words like this constantly, which is why the language can sound fast to a learner listening for separate pieces.

Words the Landscape Made

Doot means the other side of the river. Not across in general — specifically the far bank. A language only bothers with a word that precise when the thing it names is part of daily life.

Puyo is island, Guyangan forest, Ilaja farm. Notice the Y running through them: this is the same softened L that turns ulo into Uyo elsewhere in the language.
