Why a Word Game for a Language With No Dictionary

Siargaonon has never had a proper dictionary, a written grammar, or a pronunciation guide. This site is an attempt at all three — and a game turns out to be one of the more useful things you can build on top of that.

Guessing a word letter by letter makes you notice how it is spelled, which is exactly where Siargaonon differs from its neighbours. The J is always hard, as in jump. The L between vowels often becomes a Y: ulo becomes uyo. You feel those rules when a letter you were sure about turns out to be wrong.

Every Puzzle Is a Real Word

There are 254 puzzles here, drawn from the verified vocabulary, the documented grammar examples, and the phrase stories. Not one of them was invented or generated. If a word appears in this game, a native speaker put it there.

235 of them carry a recording. Solve one of those and you hear the word spoken — not a synthetic voice reading a spelling back, but an actual speaker saying an actual word. That is the point of the game rather than a bonus on top of it: the reward for guessing correctly is learning how it really sounds.

The handful without a recording stay silent rather than being read by a machine. A synthesised voice mispronouncing Siargaonon would teach the opposite of what this site is for.

How the Clues Work

You are given the English meaning, so this is not blind guessing. Underneath it sits the word's category — Family, Body Parts, Months of the Year — and, where it exists, a usage note explaining how the word behaves.

Notes that would give the answer away are held back until the end. Once the puzzle is finished you see the full note, because that is when the explanation is worth reading.
